Most font designers can probably relate that when you see one of your designs in the wild it stops you in your tracks and screams ‘I did that!” I knew from the second I spotted the poster for the Netflix show, Fear Street: Prom Queen, that it was one of mine, but I’ve done so many of these 1980s power fonts that I couldn’t immediately place it.

It might have also been because a fair bit of modification has taken place, but I did eventually nail it down to the font Action Hero. The original is deliberately rough around the edges with a heavy, dry brush texture, so I understand the smoothing needed to make it less visually busy in this instance. The designers have also customised some of the characters so that the letterforms work together as a whole. I think it works well, and does a great job a capturing the old-school paperback covers of R.L. Stines original books.
