A golden-age in film marketing or just nostalgia?
In a tucked away corner of my studio you’ll find a wall decorated with rows of old ex-rental video tapes. A shrine to my childhood and its many misspent nights sat watching horror movies, and a personal reminder of where my love for all things art and design began.
Amazingly, most of these VHS tapes still play just fine, and are watched now and again when I itch for an authentic, lo-fi experience. Most often though I come back to simply to gaze at the covers. Their outrageous attempts to grab your attention through eye-popping illustration and title design are a constant inspiration in my own work.
Having grown up in such a vibrant period it always depresses me a when I scroll through today’s endless stream of passive design. It’s minimal effort to keep you engaged both a worry and a motivation.
I’ve picked some favourites here and collected them into handy genre based categories. Check out some of the films if they’re new to you too. They all promise a good time, and I don’t just say that through nostalgia tinted glasses; I think.
