The Joy of Licensing

Most customers require a commercial license when they use fonts or graphics in their own products intended for sale. These options describe the common types of license you’ll encounter, covering a variety of purposes. Choosing the right license for you will depend on your project’s scope and potential audience.

All products are available to purchase and download via a marketplace vendor or directly under my own Just One License option.

Marketplace Vendors

When you click a link to buy via a marketplace vendor you’ll be redirected to the relevant site to complete the purchase and download your fonts. All vendors have their own variables in license agreements, but you can use my descriptions below as an introduction to the terminology used. Please follow the guidelines set out by the relevant vendor and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Just One License: It Covers (Almost) Everything!

An exclusive license type to Wingsart Studio, Just One License is my attempt to cut through the licensing jargon and confusion, helping customers use my fonts with the confidence of a pay-once, and (almost) unlimited license. Read more below.

A no-fuss, pay-once license that enables you to use fonts whenever and wherever suits you. Easy Peazy!

COMMON FONT TERMINOLOGY

Desktop:

For print, branding, and static design work. The licenses are per user, one per person using the font files. Select the number of users (seats) where appropriate.

Webfont:

For embedding live fonts into websites you own or control. Measured by monthly page views. Select the right tier where appropriate.

ePub:

For embedding fonts in digital publications. Measured in the number of titles published. Select the right tier where appropriate.

App:

For embedding fonts in mobile apps, desktop software, or games. Measured by monthly active users. Select the right tier where appropriate.

COMMON GRAPHICS TERMINOLOGY

Personal:

The best option when using an asset within a project not intended for sale. This could be a school project, private party, club or social media post. Explicitly not for commercial projects.

Commercial:

Allows for use within products for sale and broadcast. A good choice for startups or short-run projects. Can be repurchased when the audience or time frame exceeds the licence.

Extended Commercial:

Recommended for most customers. This covers larger commercial projects, extending to online, broadcast, apps and games. Can be repurchased when the audience or time-frame exceeds the license.

Studio & Corporate:

Use for multiple users within a project for print, online and broadcast. Recommended for use within an intellectual property, film and TV production, video-games, or other project where an asset may be shared across a studio or corporation.

What is a Licensed Asset and an End Product?

Any downloaded product with your customer details attached during the ordering process. This applies to all license types, including free products. An end product is something you create from the assets purchased from Wingsart Studio.

What is a Commercial Project?

Commercial use applies when one more of the below is true:

– Involves an exchange of money or other consideration.
– Promotes a business, product, or service.
– Financial gain or other consideration is sought or a result.

Other Common Definitions:

CSS: A rule that allows the viewer’s website browser to render a font by pointing to a file.

Print-on-demand: A type of application that provides print or digital items to order. Under these license terms, the use of fonts in conjunction with this technology is only permitted with Just One License.

Rasterized: the conversion of vector graphics or fonts, to pixel graphics that are not editable or scalable.

The “Don’t Be A Douche” Clause:

All items marked with an asterisk (*) fall under my, ‘Don’t Be A Douche’ clause, which I think speaks for itself.

Do:

– Use the asset within the terms set out in the purchased license.
– Use the asset for non-commercial activities with all license types.

– Promote any unlawful, discriminatory or offensive purpose.*
– Use in a manner that allows an end user to generate personalised content.

BUY DIRECT: Just One License

Countless customers have contacted me over the years, totally confused by industry standards in font licensing, baffled by its terminology and legal requirements. Frankly, I don’t blame them. When you just want to buy a font, decoding the rights and wrongs of Desktop, Web, ePub and App licences feels like an unnecessary hurdle. Add to that the number of users (or seats) you might need, plus the fortune-telling required to know how successful a project might be, something that should be fun becomes a stress.

That’s why I’ve introduced Just One License. An enterprise style license that covers everything you might need, including perpetual physical, digital, broadcast and streaming use, so you can develop your projects without the worry of future compliance. It’s a great option for freelancers, studios or corporations covering a broad commercial landscape.

For more information and the EULA, please click here.
