New on DVD is the documentary, Robert Williams Mr. Bitchin’. Offering a profile of this prolific painter and founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, it tells the history of how, when aligned with figures such as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Von Dutch and R. Crumb, they kickstarted a ‘lowbrow’ revolution. His paintings offer a mind-bending mix of psychedelic imagery with hot-rods, pin-ups and historical and pop-culture references, but also demonstrate an absolute dedication to craftsmanship and an anti-establishment attitude that rightly criticises a superficial art industry.
Featuring appearances from Axel Rose and Slash, (the artwork Appetite for Destruction causing a fair amount of controversy at the time) Debbie Harry and Anthony Kiedis, it’s a pretension free look at one of todays great counter-culture artists and well worth seeking out.
