The Art of Halo 4

In Awakening: The Art of Halo 4, games journalist Paul Davies takes the reader through the creation of the latest instalment of one of the most popular video-game series of all-time, and one that established Microsoft’s Xbox in 2001 as a major force in the video games industry.

It’s fair to say that this book’s near 200 pages are packed to the brim with concept art and designs including otherworldly locations, weaponry, alien creatures and Master Chief himself, that will no doubt interest fans of the series and digital artists alike, but it admittedly all feels very familiar if you’ve followed Halo 1, 2 and 3. There’s certainly some brilliantly atmospheric pieces from Sci-Fi artist Sparth and the development team at 343 Industries (taking over from Bungie), but the constant muted colour palette and abstract circle/hexagonal motifs (something consistently borrowed across all Sci-Fi games nowadays) eventually gets a little tiresome.

Again, Halo fans and completists will undoubtably get a kick out of this book, it’s a well presented and thorough collection with its only fault being the lack of variety in the work, so if there is to be a Halo 5 maybe the developers can bring something new to the table?
